Valtir Rentals Provided Construction Site and Pedestrian-Traffic Channelization Solutions during Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium Renovation Project

Valtir | August 23, 2022

Valtir Rentals provided construction site safety solutions, such as perimeter fencing around the Clemson Memorial Stadium during the university’s stadium renovation project that started at the end of the 2021 season.

The Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Clemson University Tigers have one of the most elite U.S. football programs, drawing fanfare and tradition to Clemson, S.C. Clemson Memorial Stadium, or “Death Valley” as it is lovingly called, is undergoing a phased renovation project to enhance the fan experience.

Brasfield & Gorrie, a Greenville, S.C. general contractor, is well-known in the football stadium construction arena and is involved in both Phases I and II. Starting at the end of the 2021-22 season, the company dismantled the scoreboard, and construction began on a new video board. The new 7,166-square-foot video board—which is five times bigger than the previous scoreboard— will be complemented by LED stadium lighting and a new sound system. This phase also adds premium seating, club spaces, and accessible seating. Phase II will focus on locker room renovations and parking lot upgrades.

During Phase I, a portion of Williamson Road near Memorial Stadium was reduced to one lane, and a temporary stop light was added. To ensure the safety of the students, staff, visitors, and construction workers, the Yodock® 2001MB barricades from Valtir Rentals (formerly Trinity Highway Rentals) were installed for the street closure, with the fence application. This barricade system gave the workers the space they needed around the scoreboard to get their job done and move heavy equipment to and from the site while also protecting the workers from on-coming traffic and the students from the construction site.

Yodock® 2001MB is a plastic, water-filled longitudinal channelizing device (LCD) that is designed for traffic and pedestrian channelization, road and street closures, or perimeter fencing for vertical construction. The units are attached end-to-end using plastic couplers. The lightweight system is made from high-density polyethylene and can be positioned by hand. It is stackable, which makes transportation and storage more efficient and less expensive. While the most popular color is white, custom colors are available. The 2001MB is MASH Level 2 tested as a longitudinal channelizer. The units are 6 feet long and 18 inches wide with an 85-pound empty weight. The project ordered 750 feet of Yodock® 2001MB.

“I used this same system at Camperdown, a mixed-use development in downtown Greenville,” says Mark Young, a senior superintendent with Brasfield & Gorrie. “I like the level of safety that it provides to the workers who work inside the perimeter of these barricades. The barricades are easy to move and rearrange if the need arises. The site prep was a group effort between Clemson Athletics, Clemson University, campus police, and all the people who run the bus system. The primary focus of the group was student and pedestrian safety, as well as the safety of motorists and the bus system.”

Brasfield & Gorrie was asked to demolish the old board, footings, and surrounding fence and gates; drill 19 cylindrical piers 30 inches in diameter at a minimum of 25 feet into the bedrock below the new board; pour pile caps 4 feet thick on top of the piers and set anchor bolts 2 1/2 inches in diameter that were an average of 4-feet long into the concrete of the cap; and erect primary steel with eight catwalks built into the framework that hold all the electrical components that power the board along with all the sound systems.

“Brasfield & Gorrie has a culture that is based on safety,” Young says. “Safety has guided our decisions since the company was founded.”

The project began right after the Tigers’ last 2021 home football game, and the Yodock® 2001MB Barricades were on site by the end of November 2021. The project was completed by the start of the following football season, with a home opener on Sept. 10, 2022.

“This was a great opportunity to work with B&G Equipment & Supply and Brasfield & Gorrie on a cool project. Everyone worked together and got the customer taken care of. We look forward to working with this company again in the future,” says York Godfrey, sales representative with Valtir Rentals.

Whether an airport project is new construction, repair or replacement, the methods and materials of choice all need to provide safety while the work is in progress and afterward, when the facility or runway is in use.

A well-known construction safety solution is the Aerocade Airport Barricade, a low-profile, water-filled, collapsible device that delineates work zones for construction and maintenance on airport runways and taxiways. It can be interconnected end-to-end for use as a demarcation device and accessorized with warning lights and flags.

The barricade is used for airport construction and maintenance, runway and taxiway projects, and as a navigational aid in and around the airfield. The Aerocade, a product of Valtir, LLC (formerly Trinity Highway), is also designed to meet the FAA Advisory Circular 150/5370-2G.

“Whether long- or short-term, we are excited about all of our rental projects, like the recent two-month rental project at Bradley International Airport where our barricades were used,” said Valtir Rental and Sales Representative Eileen Gregory. “We received nothing but compliments for our service and company.”

Convenience and safety factors include: reflective sheeting for increased visibility, which can be accessorized with warning lights and flags, and is collapsible and stackable for more efficient transportation and storage. The FOD-free design offers jet blast resistance when properly filled with water. Valtir, LLC is a global supplier of commercial highway products, including guardrails, end terminals, cable and steel longitudinal barriers, crash cushions, truck and trailer mounted attenuators, water-filled barricades, sign supports, and delineators. Valtir’s products are tested to, and eligible for, reimbursement under established U.S. federal crash test standards and FAA Advisory Circulars, and our products meet FAA’s American Made Designation.

“Waters Construction has proven themselves once again at the Taxiway Rehabilitation of Taxiway S at Bradley International Airport,” said Gregory. “During a time of material delays and labor shortages; we are humbled to provide our signature airport barricades, Aerocades, along with lights, flags, and Lighted “X” Runway Closure Trailers.  We pride ourselves on our above and beyond customer service to serve customers such as Waters.  While Waters Construction continues to successfully and effectively produce high-quality work on time, we look forward to partnering with them again in the near future.”

Crash Cushions Bring Layer of Safety to Interstates

Valtir News | August 20, 2021

As Tennessee DOT widens and modifies 1-75, including ramps to 1-24, the REACT™ M System was added as an additional safety feature.

The National Safety Council reports that roadway deaths increased during 2020 even though the number of miles driven decreased. Departments of transportation are looking for ways to reverse these numbers for 2021 and beyond.

The Tennessee Dept. of Transportation (TDOT) is in the midst of a design-build interchange modification on I-75 at I-24 under the direction of general contractor C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. The REACT™ M system, which recently received Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) eligibility, was selected by TDOT to bring an added layer of safety to the project. Site-Safe, LLC distributed and oversaw the installation of the REACT M in March.

The REACT M is a redirective, non-gating crash cushion that consists of six high-density polyethylene cylinders per unit attached to a steel backup and base-track assembly. It is tested to MASH 16 Test Level 3. The REACT M includes a self-contained backup structure that is designed to resist movement during head-on and side impacts and can protect hazards up to 30-in. wide. The system has shown self-restoring characteristics when impacted within MASH 16 crash test standards.

C. David Rich, president of Site-Safe located in Leitchfield, Ky., says, “The first version of the REACT (REACT 350) was invented at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and accepted by FHWA, both in 1995. It is only fitting that the latest version of the REACT (REACT M) had its first install in Tennessee, the state where it all started. With the recent FHWA eligibility, we now expect to see many more REACT M installations in both permanent and work-zone applications throughout the U.S.”

Heavy-Duty Composite Mats Transform Soft, Sandy Beaches into Stable Surfaces for Renourishment Project

Valtir News | August 2021

MegaDeck Composite Mats

Ultra-durable MegaDeck HD access mats offered ground protection as construction crews trucked 31,000 cu yds. of sand across the Key Biscayne shoreline.

As Hurricane Irma swept across South Florida in 2017, the resulting storm surge wrecked a 1.2-mile stretch of shoreline in Key Biscayne, a barrier island located near Miami.

Between March and April 2021, crews led by Ferreira Construction trucked in approximately 31,000 cu yds. of new sand to rebuild the damaged beach and dunes and maximize shoreline protection for the future.

Valtir Rentals provided 100 MegaDeck HD access mats on the beach renourishment project to reduce construction impacts and provide safe, stable surfaces to support vehicles and heavy equipment.

The economical, ultra-durable system is made of high-density polyethylene with specialized fillers for strength, plus ultraviolet and anti-static additives to withstand the rigors of construction hauling, adverse weather conditions, and difficult terrain. The MegaDeck HD panels connect easily and in various configurations using a single T-bar tool and are laid seamlessly due to 12-in. flanges that guide the mats into place.

“I was impressed,” recalls Steve Hayes, Regional Manager of Sales at Valtir Rentals, who visited the site and witnessed the construction activities. “This operation had many large dump trucks and pieces of heavy equipment hauling, moving, and spreading approximately 100 truckloads of sand each day along the beach, which remained open to the public.”

INDOT Deploys SS180®M Equipped

Back-Of-Queue Warning Trucks in Efforts to Improve Work Zone Safety

Valtir News | April 2021

INDOT Work Zone Safety Showcase at the Robert D. Orr Plaza near the Indiana Statehouse on Monday, April 19, 2021.

With more than $2B slated for roadway maintenance and construction projects across the state of Indiana in 2021, the upcoming road construction season promises to be a busy one. And along those freshly paved roads, Hoosiers will be seeing lots of back-of-queue warning trucks like the SS180®M, also known as truck-mounted attenuators or TMAs.

The SS180®M TMAs, manufactured by Valtir, were shown to the general public during a Work Zone Safety Showcase at the Robert D. Orr Plaza near the Indiana Statehouse on Monday, April 19.  Site-Safe, LLC and The Hoosier Company, Inc. supplied the SS180®M TMAs on display at the showcase.

INDOT Work Zone Showcase April 2021

“Partnership across the road construction industry is what it takes to make this record-breaking construction season a safe one.”

Hope Tollett, Fleet Manager at Site-Safe, LLC

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), in conjunction with road construction contractors, state police, and safety equipment suppliers, hosted the Work Zone Safety Showcase to highlight new safety measures being implemented to help reduce the risk of crashes in work zones and make them safer for road construction crews.

“The Hoosier Company as a partner with INDOT is excited to see technology be used in the work zone to reduce back of queue crashes. The highway construction industry is all in this together to make sure everyone on the Indiana roadways makes it home safely to their families.”

Josh Coulter, Director of Highway Safety Products, The Hoosier Company

The SS180®M equipped back-of-queue warning trucks, automated queue warning systems, and the connected technology alert system are part of a three-pronged approach to improve work zone safety by combining equipment with technology solutions. The SS180®M will be fitted with high visibility warning lights and portable message boards designed to warn motorists to prepare to slow down or stop when approaching a work zone.

“Site-Safe is honored to partner with INDOT by utilizing connected technology on our entire fleet, which provides notification to drivers ahead of construction zones, ultimately saving lives.”

                                             – Hope Tollett

In 2019, Indiana formed a task force to research and test various solutions to improve work zone safety.  The Protect the Queue program – which pairs two queue trucks ahead of a backup to alert motorists to an upcoming backup so that drivers can begin to slow their speeds in advance of the queue, was developed out of this initiative and piloted in 2020.

In addition to the Protect the Queue program, INDOT offers the Hoosier Helpers program to assist stranded motorists. It also works closely with research institutions like Purdue University and the Joint Transportation Research Program to evaluate new solutions. The Hoosier Company has been active with various aspects of the three INDOT programs.

“The Protect the Queue program has increased visibility of backups and reduced severe rear-end collisions,” said Coulter. “Everyone would like to see zero deaths in our work zones this season.”

When Site Access and Ground Protection Matter

Valtir News | March 2020

Construction sites are temporary opportunities to improve the built environment. They require a bevy of equipment, materials, and personnel moving in and out of a site to get the job done. This is often accomplished with the use of access matting; however, the type of mat matters. Commonly used wood and timber mats reduce our nation’s hardwood forest reserves, and they have a short lifespan, large environmental footprint, and increased freight demand and cost. Wood mats often splinter, degrade and fill our landfills after only two to three years of use. Additionally, wood mats do not interconnect with one another, which creates a nonuniform and unstable surface.

Valtir Rentals has an alternative to wood mats that provides an eco-friendly solution, while reducing the freight costs and handling expenses by as much as 50% versus wood mats.

Valtir Rentals’ heavy-duty mats bear up to 600 psi over various terrains and climates. Ideal for construction sites, lay-down, and staging areas, the mats are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and have UV protection and anti-static fillers. Additionally, composite mats are nonabsorbent, which helps prevent cross-contamination, rotting and degradation, and becoming saturated. Unlike wood mats, HDPE is nonreactive and can be recycled at the end of its lifespan. Each mat connects with adjacent mats using an overlapping flange and inter-locking system. The end result provides a continuous, uniform, and smooth surface that is easy to install in a variety of configurations. Their flexibility allows the mats to follow the contour of the terrain without breaking or cracking while helping to distribute loads to prevent rutting or damage to the underlying surface. A medium-duty alternative also is available for temporary roadways, pedestrian pathways, or turf protection.

Valtir Rentals’ ground protection products are available for rent nationwide. The engineering community faces many jobsite challenges;  working with unfavorable ground conditions does not have to be one of them.
