Successful First Installation of the CENTRA Crash Cushion in Switzerland

Valtir International | September 10, 2024

Congratulations, Miles Boyd, and a superb job by our International Sales team, whose dedication and hard work were instrumental to the successful installation of the first CENTRA crash cushion in Switzerland!

Valtir’s 110kph CENTRA replaced an existing median double-sided non-energy-absorbing configuration. The installation site is at the Schaffhausen Schweizersbild, Switzerland, a main arterial road that required full road closure under considerable tight time constraints.

According to Miles Boyd, Valtir Director of Sales for the UK and Central Europe, “Our distributor’s decision to present the CENTRA for this application was an inspired choice.”

Valtir’s distributor, FRIKE electronic AG, offered the road administration a solution built off-site with the CENTRA mounted on a structural precast raft foundation. The entire system was delivered to the site and positioned in a pre-cut recess in the existing asphalt road surface. The off-site assembly allowed for optimum efficiency in both the quality of the CENTRA build and the concrete strength. The CENTRA’s compatibility with off-site construction meant it could be delivered to the work zone with its associated foundation attached.

“This modular delivery style resulted in the installation being complete (including asphalt patching and transitional connection to the existing VRS system) in a little over two hours,” said Boyd.

Valtir’s next generation of products takes a holistic view in support of Europe’s Vision Zero mission by offering industry-leading products while safeguarding work zone operatives with reduced installation times.

Vision Zero is a strategy first implemented in Sweden in the 1990s to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. According to their website, Vision Zero has proved successful across Europe — and now it’s gaining momentum in major American cities.

“This is another excellent example of how our distributors frequently combine Valtir products with an innovative solution to a challenging situation,” said Brian Smith, Vice President of International Sales at Valtir.   “Congratulations to FRIKE electronic AG on a very impressive CENTRA Crash Cushion installation!”

An Unwavering Commitment to Roadway Safety Innovation

It is with immense pride and enthusiasm that Valtir announces and congratulates Jim Crowley, our VP of New Product Development and Marketing, on being awarded the prestigious ARTBA Traffic Safety Industry Division (TSID) Jake Landen Roadway Safety Private Sector Award. This distinguished honor recognizes Jim’s outstanding contributions to highway safety and his unwavering commitment to improving transportation infrastructure for over 35 years.

Jim received this well-deserved award during ARTBA’s Traffic Safety Industry Division (TSID) meeting and Summer Classic golf outing on June 10 in Des Moines, Iowa. This annual event brings together members of AASHTO’s Committee on Traffic Engineering and the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Jim’s career in roadway safety began in 1987 as Director of Marketing for Energy Absorption Systems (EAS) in Chicago, Illinois. In this role, he pioneered some of the field’s first training programs, leading initiatives to educate industry professionals. As part of Trinity Highway in 2010, Jim developed the SNAP (Safety Needs Analysis Program) and the Certified Lifesaver courses. These programs provided crucial guidance on product features, performance, installation, maintenance, and repair, specifically targeting FHWA, DOTs, consultants, and contractor design engineers for education in roadside safety.

His forward-thinking approach was instrumental in transitioning EAS’s NCHRP Report 230 product portfolio to 350 standards, and now, with Valtir, to MASH Standards, ensuring our products meet the highest safety benchmarks.

Beyond his significant contributions at Valtir, Jim has dedicated countless volunteer hours to advancing industry associations. He has served on the ARTBA Board of Directors and as Past Chairman and Current Member of the TSID, where he actively champions roadway infrastructure safety. His influence extends to multiple ARTBA committees, foundation task forces, and work groups, as he continuously strives to improve roadway safety standards.

Jim has held key positions in various associations, including:

  • AASHTO: Friend of the Traffic Engineering Committee, Friend of the Roadside Safety Committee
  • ATSSA: Member of the Manufacturers and Suppliers Committee, Temporary Traffic Control Committee, and various ATSSA foundation activities
  • NCUTCD: Friend of the Temporary Traffic Control Committee
  • NTPEP: Member of the Delineator Committee
  • TF-13: Active Member
  • TRB: Member of multiple committees, including AFB20 Roadside Safety, AHB50 Traffic Control Devices, AHB55 Work Zone, AND40 Visibility, and AHB30 Autonomous Vehicles

Jim is a trusted expert whose profound knowledge and insightful contributions continue to shape the roadway safety industry. He is widely recognized as a reliable source of information and innovative solutions, frequently sought after for task forces and working groups. His passion for collaboration and unwavering commitment to advancing transportation technology are evident in all his work and his vision for the future of transportation infrastructure.

Join us in congratulating Jim Crowley on this truly well-deserved honor, recognizing his exceptional dedication and impact on highway safety.
